Abstract

The issue of race between these two countries is not a foreign concept to many, however, in wake of the recent law passed which denationalized thousands of Haitians born in the Dominican Republic after the year 1929 has brought this debate on race to the center of global attention. Through analysis of the text ‘La Isla al revés’ by former Dominican president Joaquin Balaguer which presents anti-Haitian rhetoric in the justification of ‘dominicanidad’ (Dominican national identity)and the photography works in David Perez’s “Performance Action”, we shall see the representation of the Haitian community via these productions. The anti-Haitian sentiments evoked by Balaguer and the pro-Haitian discourse by Perez shed light on how the recent TC0168/13 law serves to meet the end goals of the Dominicans to maintain a ‘black free’ nation.
