Abstract

The purpose of my research is to expose what has an impact on a students academic attainment in correlation to their socioeconomic background. This research was conducted based on my overall research question, How does parental socioeconomic status correlate with the high school to college transition in the NCES High School Longitudinal Study of 2009? A student’s academic attainment is defined by the high school-to-college transition which is made up of the steps that a student takes in high school leading up to college. I used quantitative data in the form of bar graphs and line graphs which were made in Powerstats and then Excel. The findings revealed that students of a higher socioeconomic status were given an advantage during the high school to college transition due to their cultural capital, parent’s level of education, and ability to afford academic resources.
