Abstract

Laika Abdulali ’13 is a Political Science major from Mumbai, India. Her proposal was to write several short stories based on 19th c. travel literature. As Laika explains:

These stories … flesh out evocative but undetailed rough sketches of persons and situations found in the Watkinson collection of pre-1900 travel literature … Isolating one of these snapshots at a time, looking through outside historical sources for a sense of authentic place, person, or character and then writing fictional but rooted stories would draw out how exceptional and yet human these far away situations are. These two sketches are based on Thomas Knox’s Backsheesh! Or, Life and Adventures in the Orient. Hartford, Conn.: A.D. Worthington, 1875.
