Abstract

Maia Madison ’15 created two maps and a guide to the cacao trade in New Spain based on resources from Watkinson collections. The maps (España and Neuva España) and Codex Cacahuatl: A merchant’s guide to the cacao trade in New Spain are hand-written, illustrated, and decorated with borders in the style of contemporary maps. From Madison’s application: “In the maps the principle variables would be cacao and its additives. In addition I would attempt to map the forms of chocolate (hot beverage, cold beverage, solid bar, cake additive, etc.) as well as the principal uses of chocolate (medicinal, ceremonial, religious, and social).”
