Abstract
In this text, we reformulate the standard definitions of the Darboux, Riemann, and Stieltjes integrals in terms of integrals of step functions rather than upper and lower sums or Riemann sums. We attempt a compilation and improvement of the best statements and proofs of standard results in the area.
