Trinity College Faculty Manuals

The Faculty Manual “defines the instruments by which the Faculty conducts its own business, participates in College-wide governance, and defends its rights, prerogatives, and interests. The Faculty has exclusive responsibility for editing the Faculty Manual” (Preface, Faculty Manual, August 2020).

Initially written by an ad hoc committee of the Trinity Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), the Faculty Manual was first published in 1966, with the assistance of the Dean of the College and the Director of Publications. The first edition was a small pamphlet totaling just sixteen numbered pages. In 1968, the Trinity College Faculty took over maintenance and oversight of the Faculty Manual from the AAUP. In 1970, the task of preparing and editing the Faculty Manual was assigned to the Academic Freedom Committee, a standing committee established in February 1970 (Sect. I.9, Faculty Manual, August 2020).

Corrections and additions to the text, as well as a more formal process of faculty governance, have resulted in the need for further and increasingly more sizable editions of the Faculty Manual. The exact number of editions of the Faculty Manual is uncertain – while the thirteenth edition appeared in 2005, the most recent is simply called the “current edition” (Preface, Faculty Manual, August 2020).

During the 1980s and the late 1990s, textual corrections were made and inserted by distributing paper inserts over the course of a year or two prior to the ‘official’ publication of an entirely new edition of the Faculty Manual. By the mid-1990s, the Faculty Manual began to be distributed through computer systems, in addition to paper. The earliest known reference to the online distribution of the Faculty Manual dates to April 1997 (Memorandum to the Faculty from George Higgins, Chair, Academic Freedom and Grievance Committee, April 9, 1997, Trinity College Archives, Watkinson Library).

Since 2007, the new edition of the Faculty Manual contains “all revisions approved by the Faculty through August” of the academic year just completed (Preface, Faculty Manual, August 2020). The “current edition” of the Faculty Manual appears on the Trinity College website. It is updated annually and can be located through the Dean of the Faculty’s webpage: https://www.trincoll.edu/dean-of-faculty/governance/.

The following historical versions and non-current editions of the Trinity College Faculty Manual represent the copies at hand in the Watkinson Library in early 2021. For the paper editions affected by the dissemination of copier-paper inserts, the College Archivist (E. Stoykovich) collated chronological versions of the Faculty Manual with the available paper copies. Thus, the date ranges attached to each edition or version refer to all of the Manual revisions voted upon by the Trinity Faculty between the dates listed, or the nearest approximation.
