Abstract

This thesis is a historical study of the formation and development of the illicit coca industry in Bolivia. It focuses on U.S. involvement in Bolivia with the hopes of shedding light on how and why coca cultivation practices transitioned from supporting indigenous, traditional customs to satisfying the growing demand for cocaine in the global north.
